The Government have published a proposed draft bill to ban Conversion Therapy, which is trans inclusive and includes an explicit ban on the use of Exorcism as a form of Conversion Therapy Practice.
We are so grateful to see this Bill, and for everyone who has campaigned for it.
The bill also aims to prevent people from being taken to other countries to undergo Conversion Therapy Practices.
The bill sets a legal definition of conversion practices as conduct which "aims to change someone's sexual orientation or transgender identity through abusive acts that seriously harm the victim"
We know there will be further debates about what constitutes "Abusive Practices", and we know how much all these practices harm victims, survivors like ourselves.
Though the proposed ban is seemingly Trans inclusive, naming both sexuality and transgender identity, we understand there is fear around whether the proposed bill will fully protect trans youth from so-called reparative therapies. We will continue to monitor the draft and any changes made as it moves through government.
We are really pleased that the bill has reached this stage and are hopeful that a full, trans inclusive, Conversation Therapy Practices Ban will pass through the government.
